An Operating System (OS) is the core software that manages all the hardware and software on your computer. It's the foundation that allows you to run applications like web browsers, office software, and games.
Windows (10 & 11)
macOS
Linux
Market share data via StatCounter (July 2025). Versions are how we track releases, like Windows 10 vs. Windows 11.
When software reaches "End of Life" (EOL), it doesn't stop working. It just stops being supported. This means it enters a risky and stagnant state.
This is the biggest risk. New vulnerabilities will not be patched, leaving your computer exposed to viruses, ransomware, and hackers.
The system is frozen in time. Annoying glitches or performance issues will never be fixed, and you won't get any new features.
New software (like browsers) and hardware (like printers) will eventually stop working with the old operating system.
If your PC is compatible, you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. This is the most direct path to staying secure.
Check CompatibilityIf your hardware is too old to upgrade, the most secure option is a new PC. Modern devices have significantly better built-in security features like TPM chips and Secure Boot.
Shop for New PCsKeep an older device out of a landfill! Linux is a free, secure OS that runs great on older hardware. All major browsers are available, and it's a great way to learn.
Explore LinuxBe wary of pop-ups, emails, or phone calls offering to "help" you upgrade. These are often scams. Only use official tools from Microsoft.
Forcing Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware can lead to an unstable, buggy experience and Microsoft may block future security updates.
