Windows 10 Reaches End of Life

October 14, 2025

What is an Operating System?

An Operating System (OS) is the core software that manages all the hardware and software on your computer. It's the foundation that allows you to run applications like web browsers, office software, and games.

Common Examples:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Apple macOS, iOS, iPadOS
  • Google Android
  • Linux
  • Google ChromeOS

What Does "End of Life" Mean?

When software reaches "End of Life" (EOL), it doesn't stop working. It just stops being supported. This means it enters a risky and stagnant state.

No Security Updates

This is the biggest risk. New vulnerabilities will not be patched, leaving your computer exposed to viruses, ransomware, and hackers.

No Bug Fixes

The system is frozen in time. Annoying glitches or performance issues will never be fixed, and you won't get any new features.

Compatibility Issues

New software (like browsers) and hardware (like printers) will eventually stop working with the old operating system.

What Can You Do?

1. Upgrade to Windows 11

If your PC is compatible, you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. This is the most direct path to staying secure.

Check Compatibility

2. Purchase a New Device

If your hardware is too old to upgrade, the most secure option is a new PC. Modern devices have significantly better built-in security features like TPM chips and Secure Boot.

3. The Fun Answer: Try Linux!

Keep an older device out of a landfill! Linux is a free, secure OS that runs great on older hardware. All major browsers are available, and it's a great way to learn.

What to Avoid

Don't Trust Unsolicited Help

Be wary of pop-ups, emails, or phone calls offering to "help" you upgrade. These are often scams. Only use official tools from Microsoft.

Don't Bypass Compatibility Checks

Forcing Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware can lead to an unstable, buggy experience and Microsoft may block future security updates.
